Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About The Lottery

No matter how long you have been playing the lottery, it just never gets old, does it?  Well at least for some people. There are also those people who pride themselves in knowing all about the lottery strategies, trivia, statistics, and all that. Yet here are some interesting facts about the lottery that you may not have heard of before.

Lotteries have been around for far longer that you may think.

If you know anything about the Bible, the Old Testament in particular, you would know that God ordered Moses to use the lottery to divide the land along the Jordan River. There are also other numerous mentions of the lottery (in their own form) in other books of the Bible.

Ancient China also has its share in the history of lottery. A warlord named Cheung Leung supposedly used a numbers game (today we call it keno) in order to persuade the people to finance his army.  Talk about ingenuity!

Then there was Augustus Caesar who wanted to raise money to be used for public works projects in ancient Rome.  What did he do? Authorize a lottery.

So if you ever hear someone saying that lottery is exclusive to the modern ages, you can tell them they are wrong. The lottery has been around for more years than anyone can count and it is likely that it would be here for many more.
