I know a lot of people don’t believe in horoscopes, but I think they’re fun to read and … damn it, there are some horoscopes that are absolutely spot on.
Anyway, don’t tell Galdys M. Mead, of Harford, South Dakota that horoscopes don’t foretell the future. Especially after her husband, Jim won $140,740 playing Dakota Cash, played only in the state.
They won on March 4.
Gladys said her husband’s fortune was foretold. “I was reading the horoscopes in the Shopping News, and it said he’d have a welcome surprise this weekend. He really did have a big surprise,” she said laughing.
Despite the prediction, the retired farm couple had trouble believing they’d won the jackpot. After Jim read the winning numbers in the morning newspaper, he told Gladys, “You’re not going to believe this, but I think we got all five numbers.”
She didn’t believe him. They checked the Lottery’s website and called the Lottery office in Sioux Falls to confirm the winning numbers before it started to sink in.
“We were so excited. We had to call our kids at work,” Gladys said.
Their three kids were just as hard to convince about the jackpot. One even asked if it was an early April fool’s joke. But now, “They’re just as excited as we are,” she said.
Jim said he usually buys one or two Dakota Cash tickets. “I win my money back every so often, but today’s a little more exciting,” he said.
Dakota Cash is played only in South Dakota. The jackpot starts again at $20,000 for the next drawing on Saturday night. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1:324,632.
