Susan Samick of Fairport, Monroe County, likes to be busy.
Since moving to Monroe County from Pennsylvania 10 years ago to be closer to family, the 67-year-old retired hairdresser divides her time between caring for her grandchildren, volunteering at her beloved Assumption of Our Lady Church, and trying to win the Lottery.
Why not? reasoned Samick.
Someone has to win; it might as well be me.
Her efforts paid off on March 9, 2009 when she inserted $5 into a New York Lottery instant ticket vending machine at her local Wegmans store in Penfield and selected an “In The Money” scratch off game from among all those on display. The ticket turned out to be a $1,000,000 winner.
I’m very glad I didn’t scratch it in the store, said Samick. I was screaming pretty loud for a while before I calmed down.
Samick said her love of family and desire to help other people will probably play a big role in how she spends her newfound fortune. It’s a Godsend. It’s just wonderful that I have been given this opportunity to help family and friends. There’s no other way to describe it “ a Godsend.
On a more practical level, the mother of three said she would like to use a portion of her prize to downsize to a new patio home and travel with her husband of 47 years, Francis, who recently retired from his job as a financial manager for the Assumption of Our Lady Church.
As is the case with most New York Lottery instant game prizes, the top prize on the In The Money ticket is paid as a 20-year annuity.
She will receive her prize in annual payments of $50,000 a year before required tax withholdings. Her annual net check will total $34,075.
