A few years ago, I ran into a Massachusetts cop (OFFICER LOTTO I called him in my book), who won $1 million on a scratch game. I also met a D.C. transit cop who won $10 million playing HOT LOTTO, a game much like Powerball.
I love it when cops win.
They’ve got a tough, stressful job and it’s great when they are lucky and win a lottery.
The latest are two Marin County sheriff’s deputies, who are $75 million richer, thanks to the Mega Millions lottery.
Their winning ticket was one of three tickets to split a $225 million Mega Millions jackpot drawn on May 1.
“It’s very surreal,” Cabaud told the press, when he met with reporters at the California Lottery’s district office in Hayward.
Asked what the couple would do now, Cabaud said, “Think, really. It’s very new and overwhelming, and we just really haven’t had any time to make any decisions.”
Hansen said, “We’re still waiting for them to say, you know, ‘Joke’s on you.’ ”
When Cabaud realized he had the winning numbers: 9, 16, 24, 40, 43 and the mega number 35, he called Hansen, who was on patrol and thought he was joking.
It was no joke. And now they are California’s newest millionaires.
The couple said they have not discussed their future with Sheriff Robert Doyle. But Cabaud said, “We go to work, and we’re at work. We devote ourselves to work. And then when we get home, we’re off, and that’s our life, you know? And I don’t think that’s really going to change.”
Cabaud said he will donate some of their money to the families of the four Oakland police officers who were shot and killed by a parolee on March 21.
GAMES WE PLAY:
There was no Powerball jackpot winner in the May 6 game, so the jackpot rolls over to $109 million.

11 tickets matched the first five balls, but not the Power ball.
Those tickets were bought in Arizona ($200,000), Iowa ($200,000), Louisiana (2, one worth $200,000, the other, $1 million because the ticket holder Power Played the bet), New Hampshire ($200,000), Rhode Island (2 worth $200,000, 1 worth $1 million), Tennessee (2 tickets, each worth $200,000) and Wisconsin ($200,000).
