James Wright, 77, of Elkton, Kentucky was playing the Pay Day Doubler and learned he had won a top prize of $40,000.
“That’s when I started to freak out. I turned white as a ghost and tears started going down my face,” Wright said.
The store clerk didn’t know what was happening. “I walked up to her and said, ‘I think I’ve just won $40,000’.”
After scanning the ticket she told him, “You’re right, you’ve won.” She advised him to sign the ticket and Wright then got in his car and drove home very slowly.
Once he got there he said he’d had enough time to calm down.Wright asked a friend to drive him to Louisville to claim his ticket.
A few days later he walked out of lottery headquarters with a check for $27,600, after taxes. Wright is retired from the US Navy after serving 27 years and plans to pay off bills with his winnings.
